Bruce Almighty - Jennifer Aniston, Jim Carrey (2003)
Synopsis of the DVD Movie: Bruce Almighty
Bruce Nolan is a local Eyewitness News TV reporter in Buffalo, New York, best known for doing human interest stories--which makes everyone happy but him. Bruce would much rather be replacing the soon-to-retire anchorman. Essentially, Bruce is disconnected with everything in his life and rarely misses an opportunity to complain about it. He has a loving girlfriend, Grace, who runs a day care center and adores Bruce in spite of his negativity. Bruce is handed a great opportunity when he's asked to do the 23rd anniversary of Niagra Falls' famed Maid of the Mist boat, which will air live during sweeps. But the mist hits the fan when it's announced on-air--just before Bruce goes live--that the co-anchor position, about to be vacated, is going to Bruce's superficial rival. In front of millions of viewers, Bruce has an on-camera meltdown, punctuated by a four-letter word not yet cleared for network television. On this worst day of Bruce's life, he's fired from the station, beaten up by a gang of toughs, and his car is vandalized. Furious, Bruce rails and rages against the Lord for his rotten luck--which is followed by a curious set of signs, one of which leads him to an old building called Omni Presents, Inc. There, Bruce meets a janitor who reveals himself to be who he really is--God! He's heard Bruce's complaints and now has an offer for the choleric newscaster--his job. By endowing Bruce with all his powers, God challenges him to take on the job and see if he can do any better!

Reviews of the movie: Bruce Almighty
'Almighty' Then!! Carrey back in fine comic form. BRUCE ALMIGHTY (2003) *** Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston, Morgan Freeman, Catherine Bell, Steven Carell, Philip Baker Hall, Lisa Ann Walter, Nora Dunn, Sally Kirkland. High concept comedy with Carrey as a put-upon Buffalo, NY news personality who feels God is out to get him gets his ultimate omplaint put to the test when He (a game Foreman) gives his powers on loan to see what he would do in His place. Laughs aplenty especially the ‘monkey scene' (‘nuff said; don't want to ruin it for those who haven't seen it yet), which deserves a spot in the inematic vault. Aniston adds a fine balance for Carrey to bounce off as his long-suffering yet supportive girlfriend and unctuous jerk news anchor Carell steals the show as a victim to the suddenly pious Carrey's shenanigans by having a speaking-in-tongues fit on-air that also should be filed away in the film vault. A fine screenplay by Steve Koren, Mark O'Keefe and Steve Oedekerk allow Carrey to riff with his spastic slapstick and go-for-the funny bone one-liners as well as re-uniting with director Tom Shadyac who lets Jim get his ya-yas out.
Bestowing Jim Carrey with godlike powers is a ripe recipe for comedy, and Bruce Almighty delivers the laughs that Carrey's mainstream fans prefer. The high-concept premise finds Carrey playing Bruce Nolan, a frustrated Buffalo TV reporter, stuck doing puff-pieces while a lesser colleague (the hilarious Steven Carell) gets the anchor job he covets. Bruce demands an explanation from God, who pays him a visit (in the serene form of Morgan Freeman) and lets Bruce take over while he takes a brief vacation. What does a petty, angry guy do when he's God? That's where Carrey has a field day, reuniting with his Ace Ventura and Liar, Liar director, Tom Shadyac, while Jennifer Aniston gamely keeps pace as Bruce's put-upon fiancée. Carrey's actually funnier before he becomes Him, and the movie delivers a sappy, safely diluted notion of faith that lacks the sincerity of the 1977 hit Oh, God! Still, we can be thankful that Carrey took the high road and left Little Nicky to Adam Sandler
