Cliffhanger Trivia

After a series of flops, Sylvester Stallone was counting on Cliffhanger to be his comeback for the '90s. Various sources indicate that under the pressure, Sylvester Stallone was not performing up to his usual abilities, until he subjected himself to a rather risky photo shoot. Dirck Halstead was the photographer sent to shoot stills that later would be used to promote the film. He convinced Sylvester Stallone that to make a really impressive shot, the star would have to crawl along a very narrow overhang. Although Director Harlin was nervous about the stunt, Sylvester Stallone was willing and managed to remain in the precarious position for 20 minutes. Afterwards Sylvester Stallone's trainer told Halstead that the shoot had reinvigorated the star. Immediately Sylvester Stallone set about rewriting and refilming almost everything that had been done and cut back the use of stunt doubles as much as possible.

Although set in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, the Environmental Protection Agency wouldn't allow filming there for fear of the damage that could be left by the film crew so the film was shot in Italy. To allay Italian governmental concerns, the production crew paid a very large deposit against clean-up costs.

In the film version shown to test audiences, Sylvester Stallone jumps forty feet from one cliff to another. That scene was cut, because the audience laughed out loud when they saw the impossible stunt. The scene was still used for trailers.

Sneak-preview audiences also saw a scene where a rabbit gets killed by gunfire. Their displeasure was strong enough for Sylvester Stallone to invest $100,000 of his own money to have the scene re-shot so that the rabbit escapes.

31 well-known climbers were used in the film, including Ron Kauk and Wolfgang G¿llich. G¿llich performed many of the film's stunts.

Kauk was Sylvester Stallone's stunt double and in order to bulk up ate five carbohydrate-heavy meals a day and pumped a lot of iron.

An avid golfer, Sylvester Stallone found that climbing roughed up his hands and consequently messed up his game.

Director Renny Harlin likes to include some sort of reference to his home country of Finland in all his movies. In Cliffhanger one of the parachutes resembles the Finnish flag.
