Synopsis of the DVD Movie: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The - Sean Connery, Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson

Allan Quatermain, the world’s greatest adventurer, leads a legion of superheroes the likes of which the world has never seen. Quatermain’s extraordinary League is comprised of Captain Nemo, Dracula vampiress Mina Harker, an invisible man Rodney Skinner, American secret service agent Sawyer, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde and M--the League’s enigmatic recruiter. The League members are staunch individualists, outcasts in fact, with checkered pasts and singular gifts that have been both blessing and curse. Now they must learn to trust each other and work as a team for the very hope of civilization. With little preparation and no time to lose, they will be transported via Captain Nemo’s extraordinary submarine, the Nautilus, to the frontline of defense: Venice, Italy. There, a masked madman known as the Fantom plans to sabotage a conference of world leaders by setting off a domino chain of explosions, sinking the entire city. The threat is catastrophic, the risks are staggering. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has 96 hours to save the world.

Movie Plot of: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The

In this extraordinary adventure, the Fantom is trying to start a World War, and be at the head of it. The Fantom has highly superior weapons to the normal weapons of that day, and he also has extreme cunning, as we see by his tricking the countries into suspecting each other for war-mongering. A supposed loyalist to her Majesty's Empire is sent to fetch Allan Quartermain(Sean Connery) in an effort to track down the group who is trying to start the war. In a private and secret meeting, Quartermain meets who he is to be teaming up with on this mission. He is accompanied by Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Rodney Skinner (the Invisible Man, Tony Curran), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Tom Sawyer (Shane West), and Dr. Henry Jekyll (Also Mr. Edward Hyde, Jason Flemyng). Soon into their adventure they discover that the Fantom is behind these attacks, but there is more to this war than battle and cunning.

Reviews of the movie: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The

Sure it comes close to taking out LOOPIEST FILM Oscar, but that's OK, there's just soo much to laugh at. The digitised London in 1899 where they ran out of CGI budget and had to complete the St Paul's backdrop with what looks like a hand-held painting. The "Thunderbirds" inspired car that at times, whilst driven by Shane "A walk To Forget" West, hits what appears to be close to 400 mph on a narrow street. A re-vamped "Nautilus" turbo, considerably larger than the TITANIC, that can navigate canals that would barely offer clearance to an overloaded gondola! Captain Nemo's ZZ Top facial hair. An "invisible man" so invisible, they forgot his character...and this is barely scraping the surface as it were.

No argument...its a travesty of Moore's original comic book, but I suspect 85% or more of viewers have never read that anyway so it's at best..irrelevant! I loved this stupid film. Every on-set squabble, Directoral gaffe, artistic mismatch, story-line continuity break, editorial hack - its all up there to see. But through it all Connery strides, rarely shaken...NEVER stirred. A charismatic colossus that succeeds despite the film under him. Alan Quartermain himself could not have handled it better. The opening bar-room brawl was vintage Bond. Age has done nothing to weary the Connery mystique, neither wrinkle or skin-fold has scored a point on this man...still so much more complete a "hero" than any screen pretender since. He alone makes this film worth seeing!

The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed. Also featuring Peta Wilson, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Richard Roxburgh, and Jason Flemyng.
