Reviews of the movie: Resident Evil

Marilyn Manson worked on the soundtrack, so it's no surprise that Resident Evil is best enjoyed by headbangers, goth guys, and PlayStation junkies. Like the interactive game it's based on, this horror hybrid pits a small band of SWAT-like commandos (including Milla Jovovich and Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez) against a ravenous hoard of zombies, resulting in a gorefest that only sociopaths could love. The tenacious heroes are trapped inside the Hive--an underground complex where an evil corporation conducts illegal research with a deadly virus--and the zombies (reanimated corpses of sacrificed employees) are fodder for endless rounds of gunfire. It's utter nonsense (not unlike director Paul W.S. Anderson's previous Event Horizon), so your best defense is to wallow in it or avoid this trash altogether. A few cool sequences are borrowed from better films (that slice-and-dice laser is cribbed from the 1998 Canadian shocker Cube), but if you're in the mood for heavy-metal carnage, this movie's for you

I didn't see this movie in theaters and never really planned to see it on DVD, but some friends rented it recently so I watched it with them. I don't think any of us expected to actually finish the movie, given the reputation of movies inspired by video games. Not one of us had played the game and only one guy had ever seen anyone play it, so I can't say how they compare or whether it has the right 'spirit' (mentioned in some of the reviews here). Taken as a straight horror-type movie, I (as well as everyone in our group) was in awe of this movie after it finished. This movie ranks up there with Aliens on my list now and I can't believe I almost missed ever watching it just because it was based on a video game. The makers of this movie should have given it a different title and put the 'based on Resident Evil' part in the small print somewhere. On its own, it would have rocked at the box office. The effects are amazing (watch the featurettes, the details they took into account during production are mind-blowing - I have no idea where they came up the kind of money this film took to make). I'm willing to admit that part of my amazement with this movie may have been due to my _very_ low expectations going into it, but, whether or not that was the case, it is still a great movie. If you liked Alien/Aliens and you either haven't played the game or are willing to forget, for two hours, that this is a game-based movie, you will have a great ride here.

Spoiler Zombie movies, what can one say, I can only describe them as zombie movies. It begain ok, but the special forces actors where too much. When one acts too over macho one looks like a wantabe. The million dollar question is if the virius only effects the dead why did the computer kill everyone. I keeped asking myself that question through out the movie! The films ending is interesting, but why do the zombie's always take over the earth.
