Movie-Film Production Information Summary:Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange Director: Julie Taymor War begets revenge. Victorious general, Titus Andronicus, returns to Rome with hostages: Tamora queen of the Goths and her sons. He orders the eldest hewn to appease the Roman dead. He declines the proffered emperor's crown, nominating Saturninus, the last ruler's venal elder son. Saturninus, to spite his brother Bassianus, demands the hand of Lavinia, Titus's daughter. When Bassianus, Lavinia, and Titus's sons flee in protest, Titus stands against them and slays one of his own. Saturninus marries the honey-tongued Tamora, who vows vengeance against Titus. The ensuing maelstrom serves up tongues, hands, rape, adultery, racism, and Goth-meat pie. There's irony in which two sons survive.

Titus Andronicus, un général romain sanguinaire, revient victorieux à Rome après avoir mené de longues batailles contre les Goths. Mais seulement quatre de ses 21 fils sont encore en vie.
Lucius, le plus vieux de ses enfants qui a survécu, lui rappelle que le rituel de la victoire exige le sacrifice d'un prisonnier ennemi. Titus choisit alors de faire exécuter le fils aîné de Tamora, la reine des Goths, elle aussi captive à Rome avec ses trois enfants et le Maure Aaron.
Malgré les implorations de celle-ci, Titus accomplit le rituel avec cruauté pour une simple question de principe. Tamora et ses deux autres fils, Chiron et Demetrius, crient vengeance.
Lorsque le corrompu Saturninus est nommé empereur et, à la surprise générale, prend Tamora pour épouse, il s'ensuit une bataille dans laquelle elle et Titus rêvent de vengeance.

Review of the Movie: TITUS with Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange
Considered by many to be Shakespeare's worst play, Titus Andronicus is a bloodthirsty tragedy full of villainous heroes and bottomless revenge--hardly the stuff of big-screen directorial debuts, it would seem. Yet Julie Taymor dives headfirst into moviemaking with Titus, a spectacular adaptation that manages to find beauty and humor in the piles of carnage.
The story begins simply enough by Shakespearean standards: celebrated Roman warrior Titus Andronicus (Anthony Hopkins) returns from a hard-won victory to bury his slain sons and avenge their deaths by killing the eldest son of his enemy, Tamora, queen of the Goths (Jessica Lange). Tamora responds by seducing the impressionable new emperor and setting all of Rome into a downward spiral of revenge, madness, and death.
Taymor, who won a Tony for her Broadway production of The Lion King, throws all her theatrical sensibilities at the story--armies are exquisitely choreographed, blood is shed so beautifully that it hardly seems real, and characters are costumed in symbolic combinations of ancient Roman and 20th-century garb. She plays up the dark comedy at every opportunity, lending a carnival flavor to the story's most gruesome moments. Excellent performances from Hopkins (whose deranged Titus is more than a little reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter), Lange, and the supporting cast help make the endless treachery credible.
